Coordinator's Update - September 14

Good Day Block Watch Captains, Co-Captains & Participants,

West Vancouver Police have responded to 321 calls for service since our last update.

Break-ins

We urge you to remain alert to anything suspicious in your neighbourhood. We are grateful for no residential break-in reports in our update this week, however, reports involving similar tactics to a Dundarave area break-in last week have been noted in jurisdictions elsewhere on the Lower Mainland.

Suspects climb to target 2nd-floor balcony windows or doors in the hope that upper floors will not be equipped with alarm sensors or security video systems. It is familiar advice, but please regularly review security of your property. Remove or secure anything that could assist suspects in climbing to upper floors. Please be watchful in all neighbourhoods and promptly call police if any suspicious persons or circumstances are noted.

If You Call Officers Will Come

Among the 300+ calls for police service in West Vancouver over the past week, another demonstration of the value of a prompt Suspicious Person/Circumstances call. A Dundarave area resident up in early morning hours called to report a male walking with a wagon, who then opened a parked van & began removing items.

Officers quickly attended, found & arrested a suspect & recovered suspected stolen property. Other theft reports this week included an e-Bike locked to a rack in a retail area near Taylor Way & Marine Drive, and a wagon, liquor & camping equipment stolen from a pickup truck in the Westport area.

WVPD in the Community – 2023 Cops For Cancer Tour Begins

Our 2023 Cops for Cancer rider Sgt. Chris Lincoln & the whole Tour de Coast team are ready to go! The 8-day, 800km bicycle tour of the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast & Sea-to-Sky Corridor departs from Vancouver in the morning, with stops in North Vancouver through the day and a scheduled stop at Park Royal by the Spindle Whorl Fountain at 4:15pm Friday afternoon.

The tour returns to West Vancouver Tuesday September 19th for a 3pm stop at West Vancouver Police Headquarters. The tour continues from there through the Lower Mainland before wrapping up Friday, September 22nd at Canadian Cancer Society HQ in Vancouver. We are aiming to raise $700,000 for Pediatric Cancer research & support programs this year.

As mentioned last week, I will proudly take part in my 10th Tour de Coast as a member of the Support Crew and as Team Bus Driver this year.

***Accordingly, I will be away from the office with the Cops for Cancer tour from September 15th to the 22nd, and return to the office Monday, September 25th. Our next scheduled Crime Alerts – Coordinator’s Update will be September 28th, 2023.***

If you see activity of concern, please don’t hesitate to call West Vancouver Police. Call 604-925-7300 for non-emergency matters. Call 9-1-1 in an emergency, including events that involve an immediate threat to a person or property or to report a substantive crime in progress.
